Delhi High Court Issues Notice to Shah Rukh Khan over Netflix Series in Defamation Suit

The Delhi High Court issued notices in relation to a case of defamation filed by IRS agent Sameer Wankhede. The case revolves around Netflix’s web series, “The Bads of Bollywood,” which has caused controversy due to its depiction of anti-drug law enforcement agencies.

On October 8, Gauri Khan, Shah Rukh’s wife and owner of Red Chillies Entertainment, was named in the legal proceedings. On her 55th birthday, Shah Rukh’s wife, Gauri Khan, is named as a defendant in a legal case. The court has sent notices to other major tech companies, including Twitter, Meta Platforms, and RPSG Lifestyle Media Private Limited.

Sandeep Sethi is a senior advocate who represents Sameer Wankhede in relation to the Aryan Khan case. He argues that Netflix’s series led to harassment directed at his client’s family via social media. There are various posts. “People are trolling me and my sister with this series,” Wankhede said in his appeal, underlining the impact the series has on him personally.

The suit claims that the “Bads of Bollywood”, a film directed by Aryan Khan, presents an inaccurate and negative depiction of law enforcement agencies working to combat drugs. This could undermine public confidence in these institutions. The legal team of Wankhede claims that Aryan Khan’sKhan’s series has created a hostile environment online for IRS officers and their families.

The Delhi High Court has clarified that it cannot injunct social media content in general. Wankhede was right to be concerned, but the court stressed the importance of following proper legal procedure. The court stated, “We acknowledge that you have a good case in your favor, but we must follow procedure.”

In the legal proceedings, a distinction has been made between content that is satirical and material that may be offensive to law enforcement officials. The hearing included references to “officers who have given blood for the nation,” underlining the seriousness of the accusations against Netflix’s production.
