Earthquake Shakes Northeast India; No major Damage Reported

Earthquake in North-East: An earthquake with a 5.8 magnitude struck Northeast India on Sunday, causing tremors felt in several states. Residents rushed out of their houses in fear after the earthquake at 4:41 pm. However, initial reports show that there was no structural damage or deaths.

The National Center for Seismology has confirmed that the Northeast earthquake occurred. Its epicenter is located in Assam’s Udalguri District at a depth of only 5 km. Residents in Assam’s districts Udalguri and Sonitpur felt the jolts, along with those in Guwahati. In addition to the northeast, the tremors were felt across Arunachal, Manipur, and the western part of Manipur, as well as in several other areas. This included the capital of Itanagar.

Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam’s Chief Minister, confirmed the event on X. He stated, “The epicenter (of the quake) was close to Udalguri.” There have been no reports of major damage or deaths. “We are closely monitoring the situation”. His statement was a reassurance for the public shortly after the earthquake occurred in Northeast India.

Dani Sulu, the State Disaster Management Director in Arunachal Pradesh (a neighboring state), provided an updated on the current situation. He said that no reports have yet been received of any structural damage or injuries. The situation is closely monitored, but it is not alarming. Authorities are continuing to evaluate the effects of this seismic event. In the Northeastern part of India, there is a seismically active zone that makes it susceptible to earthquakes.

The National Center for Seismology is the main agency of the Government of India for the monitoring of earthquakes in India. NCS has a National Seismological Network that is used to locate and detect earthquakes, and to provide information to the concerned government departments as well as to the public. It is committed to providing accurate and timely seismic data for disaster management, research, and other purposes.
