Mumbai Dahi Handi Death: 11-Year-Old Dies During Festival Practice

Mumbai Dahi Handi Death: Mumbai August 14, 2023, an 11-year-old boy named Mahesh, Ramesh, Jadhav died while practicing for Dahi Handi.
On Sunday evening, the incident took place at Ketkipada near Dahisar. The Govinda Navtarun Mitra Mandal was practicing the formation of a human-shaped pyramid. Jadhav was a team member who had reached the 6th level when, at around 10.45 pm, he fell. He managed to grasp briefly the safety line, but ultimately fell and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to Pragati Hospital, Dahisar East, where he died from his injuries.
Teams from Mumbai, known as Govinda Pathaks, have been practicing late at night to improve their human pyramids. Dahi handi is just days away. A police officer commented on preparations and noted the building of platforms high in various places, such as Dahisar. This tragic accident has raised questions about safety protocol during the rehearsals, despite all of these efforts.
In 2017, it’s worth noting that the Bombay High Court confirmed the Maharashtra Government’s declaration allowing only children 14 years and older to take part in Dahi Handi. The ruling removed earlier restrictions on the height of the human pyramids. Jadhav’s tragic death raises concerns about how these rules are enforced and what precautions were taken during high-risk practices.
Dahi Handi, the highlight of Janmashtami in Maharashtra, involves building human pyramids that are used to smash an earthen curd pot, symbolizing devotion and teamwork. This popular, competitive, and fun event is not without danger, especially for those who climb to the top of the pyramid.
The tragic event serves as a reminder that Dahi Handi is fraught with danger, and it’s imperative to put the safety of children first. To prevent future incidents, authorities may have to review safety procedures and enforce adherence to guidelines.
