OpenAI Opens New Office in New Delhi to Accelerate AI Adoption

OpenAI has announced its plans to establish its first local office in New Delhi in the second half of this year. OpenAI is experiencing a remarkable increase in its Indian market. ChatGPT usage has quadrupled over the last year.
This move highlights India as ChatGPT’s second-largest market worldwide and its fastest-growing region. OpenAI’s move reflects India’s rise as a global AI superpower, made possible by a strong developer ecosystem and exceptional talent in the tech industry.
The level of enthusiasm and opportunities for AI in India are incredible. India is well-positioned to be a leader in AI, with a strong developer ecosystem and a great deal of government support via the India AI Mission. Sam Altman said this as co-founder and CEO at OpenAI. Opening our first office in India and creating a team there is the first important step to our mission to bring advanced AI to India and build AI with India.
OpenAI is now hiring its Indian team. The local team will be focused on strengthening the relationships with government agencies, partners, business, developers and academic institutions throughout India. In order to speed up AI adoption in India, the company has several initiatives that are specific to India.
ChatGPT Go, a subscription plan tailored for India priced at Rs399 a month and with UPI integration support, is one of these initiatives. OpenAI also announced the OpenAI Academy – a national AI literacy program created in partnership with India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology.
ChatGPT GPT-5, the company’s newly launched model that supports Indic languages significantly better than its predecessor. OpenAI also introduced Study Mode. This specialised feature guides users in personalised learning with interactive questions and step-by-step instructions.
India’s digital environment offers compelling expansion opportunities for OpenAI. OpenAI’s platform ranks India among the five most important developer markets in the world. It also hosts the biggest population of ChatGPT users worldwide. The growth of this user base is significant, as the number of weekly active users has quadrupled in India over the last year.
Ashwini Vaishnaw, Union Minister of Information Technology, said: “OpenAI’s decision to set up a presence is a reflection of India’s increasing leadership in digital innovations and AI adoption.” As part of our IndiaAI Mission, we’re building an ecosystem of trusted, inclusive AI. We welcome OpenAI as a partner in this mission to make sure the benefits of AI are available for every citizen.
OpenAI may not have yet determined the exact location of the India office in New Delhi. Still, the opening of the India unit is a significant milestone for the global expansion strategy. OpenAI will be able to serve Indian users better and contribute to India’s AI ecosystem development with its local presence.
The expansion is in line with India’s digital transformation objectives and makes India a global leader for AI adoption and innovation.
