Princess Leonor of Spain is about to write a new chapter in Europe’s history. Spain will have its first reigning monarch in more than a century-and-a-half. The Princess of Asturias, who is only 20 years old, will be the first queen regnant in Spain since Queen Isabella II’s reign ended in 1868. This is a significant change for both the Spanish monarchy and the House of Bourbon.
Spain’s Princess Leonor is the oldest daughter of King Felipe and Queen Letizia. She has dedicated her entire life to preparing herself for this responsibility. The ascension of Princess Leonor will modernize institution and highlight how a monarch must be prepared. According to the statement regarding this transition: “Her ascension marks a historical shift for the Spanish Monarchy as she will become the first woman monarch who will rule independently since Queen Isabella’s reign, which ended in 1868.”

Spain’s Princess Leonor is carrying on a long tradition. Since the early 1700s, the Bourbons have held the Spanish Crown. After the fall of Franco’s dictatorship, her grandfather, King Juan Carlos, restored the monarchy in 1975. King Juan Carlos played an essential role in the restoration of democracy in Spain. He abdicated in 2014 to be replaced by his son Felipe. The focus now shifts towards the next generation. Leonor was born in 2005. She has an older sister, Infanta Sophia, who was born in 2007. Spain Princess Leonor’s upbringing has been based on education and readiness for military service. Spanish law requires that an heir-to-the-throne undergo intensive military training in the Army, Navy and Air Force as preparation for her future role as Commander-in-Chief. She completed an intensive academic program at the UWC Atlantic College, Wales, and earned the International Baccalaureate Diploma. Her linguistic abilities are also praised, as she is fluent in Spanish and Catalan. She can also speak English, French, Arabic, Mandarin, Spanish, and Catalan.
In August 2023, Spain’s Princess Leonor started her military career. She was part of a group of 560 Cadets in Zaragoza for Army Training. In 2024, she transferred to the Navy, embarking on an essential 140-day journey aboard the training vessel Juan Sebastian de Elcano. She served on the standard crew during this 17,000-mile journey. This included sailing around South America and stopping in New York. Before returning to Cadiz, she gained valuable experience on the Blas De Lezo warship.

Recently, Spain’s Princess Leonor reached a significant milestone during her Air Force Training at the Air and Space Academy of San Javier in Murcia. She completed her solo flight on a Pilatus PC-21 in December 2025. This made her the first woman member of the Spanish Royal Family to achieve such an accomplishment. She will be awarded the Gold Medal of the Region of Murcia in recognition of her time and dedication spent there. This is the highest award for a regional. The award is a testament to her success in achieving the position of supreme commander for Spain’s Armed Forces.
