Aliya Rahman Viral Footage: Minneapolis ICE Encounter Involves LGBT & Racial Justice Activist
Aliya Rahman has been identified in a video widely distributed as the woman who was forcibly removed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents from her car. Community groups and advocacy organisations have been paying close attention to the incident that occurred at a demonstration in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on January 13th.
Aliya Rahman was involved, according to reports, in a protest in response to the death of Renee Nicole Good. Good, a three-parent mother, had been fatally shot less than a month earlier by an ICE officer. Rahman allegedly stopped ICE vehicles at the protest, according to reports.
The video footage shows the federal agents smashing the car window of Rahman. Agents are seen removing her while she is screaming from the car. Aliya Rahman shouts that she’s “disabled,” and claims she was “just trying to go to the doctor” during the altercation. Aliya Rahman was then handcuffed by masked federal officers and led away.

Aliya is a Minneapolis-based “community-focused security practitioner”. She has a long history as an advocate for racial and LGBT justice and significant experience working as a software developer. She describes herself on her social media as “your friendly neighbor deniable assets.”
Aliya Rahman was a New America Open Technology Institute fellow before this incident. The 43-year old focused her projects on police body cameras and integrating technology into policies. Rahman, according to its website, is a community organizer and legislative advocate who has worked on racial justice and legislation campaigns. She has 15 years of experience in software development and social justice movements.
Rahman, a US citizen born in the United States, spent part of her childhood living in Bangladesh. Her family moved to Bangladesh shortly after 1971, when the liberation struggle of her country against Pakistan was over. Rahman said that he was able to witness the country’s creation during this time. I was raised seeing the protests of garment workers on the streets, which were primarily women.

Aliya Rahman is a veteran of the nonprofit sector and has worked in advocacy. Aliya Rahman was the director of Movement Technology at Wellstone in Minnesota, an organization dedicated to educating community activists. She worked hard to change the image of Wellstone to include queer, non-conforming, and immigrant communities.
Aliya has also been active in organizations like the Center for Community Change and Code for Progress. Equality Ohio is an LGBT advocate group. Aliya Rahman’s social media activity shows a longstanding commitment to the Black Lives Matter and pro-Palestine movements.
