Former MP Prajwal Reanna is Found Guilty in Sexual Assault Case

Prajwal Revanna is a former member of parliament from the JD(S), and grandson to former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda, has been found guilty by a court in his locality of sexually assaulting a domestic helper. After extensive deliberation and a long trial, the court handed down its decision on Friday.

Former Mp Prajwal Revanna is accused of repeatedly attacking a woman, 47 years old, who worked as a domestic at the farmhouse owned by his family. In April of last year, the victim made a formal complaint that led to an extensive investigation. As the hearings continued, activists and legal specialists praised the victim’s courage for coming forward.

Revanna was in custody since his arrest last January, and during that time, comprehensive evidence as well as witness testimony were examined. In order to clarify the case, the court deferred its initial verdict after hearings ended on 18th July. After a thorough review, the court delivered its verdict, convicting both accused of multiple offences, including sexual assault, criminal harassment, and other crimes under the Indian Penal Code.

According to sources close to proceedings, Revanna has also been charged with voyeurism as well as the distribution of indecent digital content. This adds another level of severity to her accusations. According to the allegations, Revanna used threats in order to discourage the victim from reporting these incidents. This further solidified the case of the prosecution.

The victim endured many years of trauma, but sought justice in the court system. Advocates for women’s issues have hailed the case as an important landmark, showing that abuse by those in positions of power can be addressed and the justice system is capable of holding all people accountable.

Revanna is also involved in multiple criminal cases. According to reports, over 2,000 videos relating to various sexual abuse cases were released last year. This led to additional investigations in which Revanna is the main accused.

Tomorrow, the court will decide the punishment. The verdict, say legal experts, could be a precedent in determining how courts respond to crimes committed by influential people.
