New Delhi Railway Station Stampede: Tragic Loss Cause High-Level Investigation
New Delhi (India) – A high-level investigation committee has presented its findings. The report identifies the cause of the tragedy that took 18 lives. Ashwini Vaishnaw presented the report to the Rajya Sabha, giving a detailed description of what led up to this tragic loss.
The investigation of the committee found that the stampede began around 8:48 pm on Foot Over Bridge-3, which links platforms 14 and 15. The station was packed with people waiting for trains to Prayagraj at the time. The narrow staircase was crowded with pilgrims carrying luggage on their backs. This made it difficult for them to move on the bridge.
Chaos was caused when heavy luggage fell off a passenger, creating confusion and anxiety amongst the crowd. This panic quickly spread, causing a rush of people to move up the crowded stairway. In a matter of moments, the panic spread, with people losing their footing, falling over one another, and causing a deadly stampede.
The incident occurred on the stairs above platforms 14-15. However, the crowding conditions and the heavy load of the passengers created an alarming situation. A single mistake could have caused panic or tragedy.
In response to the report, Vaishnaw stressed the need for crowd control at the major transit hubs in the nation. He said, reinforcing that immediate action is needed to avoid such tragic incidents. The investigation has led to suggestions such as reevaluating the layout of stations, upgrading luggage handling facilities, and implementing advanced crowd management strategies.
Delhi’s tragic stampede is a stark reminder that overcrowding in railway stations with high traffic and an inadequate infrastructure are serious problems. The authorities are being pressed to make the reforms necessary to prevent a repeat of this tragedy.
