Bengaluru (India) – A court of special jurisdiction sentenced the former JD(S), MP Prajwal Revanna to “imprisonment until the end of his life”. This was for the repeated sexual assault of an employee of the farm of the Revanna family in Hassan. This judgment was handed down a day following Ravanna’s conviction of all charges.
Santosh Gajanan Bhat, a judge of the Special Court of Sessions in criminal cases against former MPs and current MLAs, delivered this verdict. Prajwal Revanna was ordered to pay Rs 11.6 lakh in penalties, of which the bulk is being paid to the victim.
Prajwal Revanna is a former Hassan MP and the grandson of H.D. Deve Gowda, was suspended by the JD(S) after multiple accusations of sexual assault and rape. The four separate charges filed against Deve Gowda paint a grim picture of his repeated misbehavior. The conviction is based on one of these cases, where the victim was a domestic employee who bravely testified.
In his decision, Judge Santosh Gajanan Bhat emphasized the severity of the crime by giving the maximum penalty allowed under law. This ruling is a powerful message about accountability for those in power.
Prajwal Revanna claimed that the proceedings in court were a momentous justice, but he also referred to the case as a part of “a political conspiracy” against himself. The court, however, rejected the claims made and accepted the evidence that was presented at the trial.
