TVK Vijay Rally Stampede: Party Demands CBI Investigation, Suspects Conspiracy

After the TVK Vijay stampede that left 40 dead and over 100 injured in Karur, the actor-politician Vijay’s party, Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam, has decided to go before the Madras High Court. It is requesting an independent investigation from the Central Bureau of Investigation, alleging criminal conspiracies behind the incident.

TVK’s legal team has prepared a request to be submitted before the Madurai Bench of the High Court. Arivazhagan stated the goal was to conduct an impartial investigation into the events that led to the TVK Vijay stampede. The party believes that an investigation led by the state would not be sufficient due to the suspected involvement of local officials from the ruling parties. Arivazhagan said to NDTV that there were criminal conspiracies in Karur. Therefore, we asked the high court not to be involved, but instead for it to investigate independently.

According to the party, they have CCTV footage and information that suggests the stampede wasn’t accidental. It was the result of an intentional plot. We have CCTV footage and reliable information that we received from locals. The evidence shows that some ruling party officials in Karur were involved in a criminal plot,” said the attorney. TVK has asked the court to form either a Special Investigation Team or to transfer the entire case to the CBI in order to find out the truth about the TVK Vijay stampede.

Arivazhagan, in response to allegations by the Tamil Nadu government that TVK had violated the safety guidelines at the rally for which it was organised, denied all breaches. Arivazhagan questioned the reason for such an accident in Karur when TVK had organised peacefully and successfully many large-scale events throughout Tamil Nadu. He said that “we did not violate any police conditions” and added that “the suspicious nature of this incident alone creates doubt.” He dismissed the claims of an intentional delay to Vijay’s arrival, blaming poor traffic management.

The ruling DMK distanced itself from the allegations of conspiracy. Syed Hafeezullah, spokesperson for the DMK, stated: “We do not want this to be politicised.” The law will have its way. “Those who make such accusations should reflect on the behaviour of their own party leaders.” The state government initiated an inquiry by retired High Court judges and filed police charges against TVK officials, including general secretary N Anand.

TVK is the political party that Vijay, a veteran actor, founded. The party’s goal is to create political change in Tamil Nadu and run for the upcoming elections. The party has actively engaged with the public at rallies and other events in the state to increase its base of support ahead of the elections.
