Why Is Illegal Racing on Western Express Highway Video Going Viral and Sparking Outrage?

Illegal racing incidents and reckless driving have been brought to the forefront following an unfortunate event that occurred on the Western Express Highway. A video that has been circulating online on the social media platform X, formerly Twitter, shows a group of bikers performing dangerous stunts. This raises serious safety concerns for both citizens and officials.

In the early morning hours of the 17th, approximately 10 motorcyclists were involved in an incident near NESCO along the Western Express Highway. Video timestamped 06:11 shows the group driving towards Bandra while obstructing traffic and causing a dangerous environment for early morning commuters. The video shows the drivers and their passengers riding without helmets. Helmets are a safety requirement. This footage highlights the violation of traffic laws in illegal racing.

Anand Chila is the user of social media who posted the video. He tagged Mumbai Traffic Police and captioned the post “Early Morning menace on Western Express Highway, near NESCO, going toward Bandra.” Video taken from a car nearby reveals the modified silencers on these bikes, which contribute to noise pollution. They also signal a clear intention to participate in illegal racing. Bikers can be seen blocking other motorists’ paths and swerving, which puts lives in danger.

Mumbai Traffic Police acknowledged this situation immediately in response to public protest and evidence from the video. On social media, they stated: “We’ve informed Bandra Traffic Section to take the appropriate action.” The assurance that action will be taken is positive, but citizens still await concrete measures to stop the illegal race on city streets.

The incident is not isolated on this road. This video comes days after a shocking viral video, posted by Jeet Mahru and showing four men riding illegally on a horse-drawn cart near Vakola bridge, went viral. The cart was in danger of colliding with another vehicle, and the drivers were posing rather than paying attention to the road. The recurrent incidents of stunts and illegal racing indicate an alarming trend among motorists towards discipline on the road.

Residents and experts warn that the Western Express Highway may continue to attract illegal racing if there is no visible police presence and stricter enforcement. These riders’ lack of concern for the consequences of their actions is apparent. They endanger themselves, as well as innocent drivers and pedestrians. Mumbai’s traffic police will closely monitor the upcoming action against these offenders as it is a measure of its commitment to safety on roads.
