Once A Viral Video of Bus Teen Indian Girl Made Internet Burst

In the past few months, the viral ’19 min video’ has been a significant source of online discussion and debate across all social media platforms in India. The video, which purportedly depicts 3 young girls from India, has gone viral across platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, Telegram and X (formerly Twitter) subjecting it to unprecedented levels of suspense and curiosity among users. Unfortunately, many content pieces related to the viral video have either not been verified at all, have been produced using misleading or deceptive claims that do not reflect the original source of the content, or produced by some form of artificial intelligence.
The internet has exploded with users searching for phrases like “19 minute 34 second video” or “viral MMS” or looking to download the entirety of these videos; all of which have led to the continued trending nature of this viral video. Many edits, re-titled videos and other nefarious means of trying to capture user clicks have come from scammers exploiting users’ interests and diverting them away from the original content or video. Cybersecurity experts have also indicated that these links may have exposed users to some sort of scam, malware or phishing attack, thus leading to increased concerns amongst users regarding their safety and security while online.
Many reports revealed that the names of non-existent individuals that were falsely identified as appearing in the alleged video, including some social media personalities and internet influencers from India. After someone falsely accused one Meghalaya’s influencers to have appeared in the video, she went on record to state that she was not, in any way, associated with the video.
Authorities warning about the emergence of AI enhanced Deepfake Videos in India has increased, and investigations that have been carried out show that some of these videos have been digitally edited using software tools designed for face swapping and AI editing. Inconsistencies found regarding facial movements, audio synchronisation and editing patterns suggest that many versions of the Deepfake videos were either edited or altered digitally.
This controversy rekindled the threat of spreading misinformation and harassment through electronic means. Authorities continue reminding users not to post unverified videos or look for unattended download links. Legal experts have also cautioned the public about posting and/or distributing any private and/or explicit materials without consent which could lead to serious consequences under Indian Cyber Laws.
According to Digital Safety experts, this incident indicates a growing trend in our growing use of AI because fake videos seem to spread more rapidly than verified facts do. Many users are now calling for the authorities to take a more substantial action against the producers of Deepfake Videos/Content and provide increased awareness about responsible use of social media.
