Banyuwangi, Indonesia: A viral video controversy involving a student from MAN 3 Banyuwangi in East Java has sparked widespread discussion on social media and prompted a formal police investigation. Authorities are also urging the public not to share the leaked clips, warning that doing so could violate laws protecting minors and the distribution of explicit content.
The incident gained national attention after explicit videos allegedly involving two high school students began circulating across multiple social media platforms. Interest in the case surged after online users claimed that a school uniform was visible in parts of the footage, leading to speculation about the students’ identities. Authorities have not officially identified those involved, referring to the student only by the initials MS because the case involves a minor.
Student Releases Public Apology
Following the online backlash, MS released a video apologising to classmates, teachers and the public for the controversy.
In the statement, the student expressed regret over the incident and acknowledged that it had damaged the school’s reputation. MS also stressed that the apology was made voluntarily and without pressure from any individual or authority.
Family Withdraws Student From School
Reports indicate that local education officials and religious leaders later met with the student’s family to discuss the situation.
After the meeting, the parents decided to withdraw the student from MAN 3 Banyuwangi. According to local reports, the student has since been enrolled in an Islamic boarding school (pesantren), with the family hoping to provide a more private environment away from intense public attention.
Police Investigation Underway
Banyuwangi Police have confirmed that the circulation of the leaked videos is being investigated as a criminal matter. Investigators are reportedly examining how the videos were distributed online while handling the case under Indonesia’s juvenile justice and child protection laws.
Authorities have appealed to internet users not to download, forward or repost the videos or any material that could reveal the identities of the minors involved. Police warned that distributing such content could carry legal consequences under Indonesian law.
‘Yang Wes Yang’ Audio Goes Viral
The controversy also gave rise to a viral social media trend centred on the Javanese phrase “Yang wes yang” (also written online as “Yank wes yank”). The audio clip, extracted from the leaked recording, has been widely reused in memes and short-form videos across TikTok, Instagram Reels and other platforms.

Beyond the investigation, the incident has renewed discussions about digital privacy, online ethics and the dangers of sharing sensitive content involving minors.
