Darjeeling Rain Deaths: 17 Dead After Heavy Rain Triggers Landslides; Sikkim Cut Off

Darjeeling Rain Deaths: At least 17 people are dead in West Bengal’s Darjeeling District after heavy rains overnight triggered landslides. This caused widespread destruction and cut off the road to important areas. Natural disasters have also cut off all roads to the neighbouring Himalayan State of Sikkim, leaving many residents and tourists trapped.

After heavy rains, landslides caused by intense rainfall occurred in several locations, including Mirik, Sukhia Pokhari and other nearby areas. The local administration, police and other emergency services have undertaken extensive relief and rescue operations in order to help those who were affected by the Darjeeling Rain Deaths. Mamata Banerjee, West Bengal’s Chief Minister, has said she will be visiting the areas affected tomorrow to supervise the response effort. Roadblocks have been caused by the severe weather on several major roads, such as the highway between Bengal and Sikkim or the main road connecting Darjeeling to Siliguri.

Narendra Modi, Prime Minister of India, expressed sorrow at the tragic event. He said on the social media platform X that he was “deeply saddened by the death toll in Darjeeling”. We are determined to provide all the assistance possible to those who have been affected. Unfortunately, the tragedy occurred just after the Durga Puja festival, when many tourists had flocked to Darjeeling. The authorities are worried that many tourists may become trapped by the road closures.

The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration has responded to this crisis by taking precautionary measures. The Gorkhaland Territorial Administration has closed tourist attractions in Darjeeling due to heavy rains, landslides and other factors. This includes Tiger Hill, Rock Garden and others. To ensure the safety of the public, iconic services such as toy trains have been suspended. The Bengal Police has established a helpline for individuals who are stranded at 9147889078.

Raju Bista, Darjeeling’s MP, also spoke out about the damage. There have been fatalities, property losses, and infrastructure damage. “I am taking stock and in contact with the appropriate authorities,” he wrote on X. The India Meteorological Department issued previous warnings about heavy rains in the area, and it is predicted that they will continue to do so until October 7. This has raised concerns over potential flash flooding. It is also believed that the impact of this weather system was felt in Nepal. There, 22 people have been reported to be dead.
