Government Breaks Silence on Bringing Back, Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi in New Viral Video

The Government of India issued a statement following the viral video of Vijay Mallya and Lalit Modi. This clip was widely circulated on social media this week and showed two controversial individuals mocking the Indian justice system, referring to themselves as “the largest fugitives.”

On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs addressed the matter. It broke its silence about the video that has caused outrage throughout the country. The government stressed that, despite the brazenness displayed in the footage, it is working diligently to bring Vijay Mallya as well as Lalit Modi to India so they can face the law.

IPL founder Lalit Modi originally shared the viral video on Instagram. The video was captured at Vijay Mallya’s 70th birthday celebration on 18 December. According to reports, the celebration took place in London’s Belgrave Square at Lalit Modi’s home. The footage shows the two posing, tauntingly referring to themselves as “the biggest fugitives” and “cocking a snook” towards the Indian authorities.

Randhir Jaiswal clarified government policy when asked about the video and the mocking remarks by the two. The delay was due to complex legal issues in cases involving cross-border, he said.

We are working to bring back the fugitives. The process is underway. Randhir Jaiswal said, “As you are aware, these cases often involve many layers of legal procedure.”

In its response, the government explains that delays are not the result of a lack of intent, but of complicated legal processes that involve multiple jurisdictions. MEA reiterated that despite the obstacles, Vijay Mallya’s and Lalit Modi’s pursuit remains a top priority. This video has reignited the public’s debate on the capability of prominent economic criminals to escape the law and live luxuriously abroad. The MEA assured the public, however, that legal and diplomatic channels were being pursued actively to guarantee their return.
