Bihar Election Commission Allows Cell Phones in Polling Booths

Bihar Election Commission introduced a measure that allows voters to leave their phones outside the polling stations during the assembly elections. The Chief Elections Commissioner, Gyanesh Kumar, announced this initiative to address a problem that voters have faced for years. They had nowhere to store their mobile phones when voting.

The Bihar Election Commission has decided to improve the voting experience and streamline the process. This new system is a convenient and secure alternative for voters, even though mobile phones remain strictly forbidden inside polling stations. The Chief Election Commissioner Kumar highlighted the solution by saying, “Polling Station ke Kamre ke Theek Bahar Matdata apna Mobile Phone Jama Kara Sakta Hai” (A voter may deposit their mobile phones just outside of the voting station room).

The announcement is a part of an overall set of measures for the forthcoming polls that Commissioner Kumar has described as “the mother of all elections.” Bihar Election Commission places a focus on law and order in an effort to make the elections not only peaceful but also smooth. It has assigned a separate observer for each of the 243 seats, a significant improvement over the old system in which one observer was responsible for multiple seats.

This will be the first time that the 2025 Assembly Elections are held after the Special Intensive Review (SIR) was conducted, which the head of the election body called “purification.” The Bihar Election Commission was committed to a democratic and accurate process. This resulted in a list with 7.43 crore voters.

Bihar’s 243 seats will be voted for in two stages, the first on November 11 and then on November 6. Votes are expected to be counted by November 14. It is expected that the election will be a major contest between the Mahagathbandhan and the ruling BJP/JD(U).
