UP BLO Suicide: Last Video Message Surfaces, Blames Work Stress “I am extremely upset” “I am very upset”

A video showing the final words of a 46-year-old BLO has been released. This video shows the enormous workload associated with ongoing revisions of voter lists, which is a situation that has led to growing concern over conditions for poll officials. The UP BLO Suicide brought to statewide light the difficulties faced by grassroots workers.
Sarvesh K., an assistant at a Moradabad government school, was discovered dead in his house on Sunday. In a note found by his family, he cited an inability to deal with the pressure of his BLO duties. Kumar appears to be fighting back tears in the video. The video shows Kumar apologizing to his family after he failed to finish the work required for Special Intensive Revision of Voter Lists (SIR).

The tragic suicide of an UP BLO happened after Kumar received his first BLO assignment on October 7, 2007. He was required to collect voter information by going door-to-door. Kumar’s message expressed his deep regret. He said that if he had more time, he would have completed the work. I haven’t been able to sleep for 20 days. “I am extremely upset” “I am very upset”

शिक्षक सर्वेश सिंह ने 3 पेज के… pic.twitter.com/LOPrQgtxyS
This is not an isolated incident. Kumar’s death fits into a troubling pattern of deaths among BLOs in several states, where the Election Commission conducts the SIR campaigns. The families of those who died have blamed the extreme stress at work as the main cause. BLOs who work as teachers and government workers often report that they are working up to 14 hours a day for little pay. They also live in constant fear of being disciplined for not meeting deadlines. The BLO suicide highlights the need for urgent action to tackle these systemic problems.
BLOs and the broader community have expressed their dismay, calling for reforms in working conditions. Sarvesh’s tragic death serves as a reminder of the cost to the people of administrative demands and ignites a discussion on support systems for election workers. A probe into the circumstances surrounding the suicide of UP BLO has been launched.

Special intensive revision (SIR)
The Special Intensive Review (SIR), a national exercise, is conducted by the Election Commission of India in order to purify and update electoral lists. The Booth Level Officers are the foundation of this process. They verify voter data on the ground in order to make sure that the voter list is accurate before elections. They are usually government employees or semi-government workers appointed to this time-bound task.
