Who Is DGP Ramachandra Rao? Alleged Viral Video Row Puts Karnataka Police Chief Under Inquiry
The Karnataka Police Department has become embroiled in a major controversy after videos circulated that showed DGP Ramachandra Rao performing intimate acts inside his office. This footage has been widely circulated on social media since January 19, 2026. It reportedly shows the director of civil rights enforcement office. The developments have caused a public uproar and prompted state officials to review the conduct of senior officers in the police under Siddaramaiah’s government.
According to reports, the incident that involved Ramachandra Rao reached the top levels of state administration. Sources familiar with the issue claim that the video footage was brought to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s attention and to senior officials in the Home Department. The authorities are now examining whether the videos were true and determining if workplace rules or the code of conduct of senior IPS officials had been violated. These videos have yet to be independently verified, but allegedly depict the officer wearing a uniform. This raises serious concerns about misuse of office.
Ramachandra Rao is the Director General of Police of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement. He was a member of the Indian Police Service from the 1993 batch. In August 2025, he assumed the role after being reinstated from a mandatory leave due to administrative problems. In his career, he has held several significant leadership roles within the state police framework. Ramachandra Rao was the chairman and managing director of Karnataka State Police Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited before his current position. In September 2023, he was promoted to DGP.
Colleagues in the Department note that although Ramachandra Rao has extensive experience in urban police and project management for infrastructure, his tenure is often impacted by internal investigations and legal challenges. Before his current role, Ramachandra Rao served as Additional Director of Police for the Bengaluru Metro Task Force as well as Inspector General for Southern Range.

The recent controversy isn’t the first time Ramachandra Rao was in public view. In March 2025, a serious controversy broke out involving the family. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence detained actor Ranya Rao at Bengaluru International Airport. Reports identified her as the stepdaughter of Ramachandra Rao. She was allegedly carrying 14,2 kgs of gold worth approximately INR 12,56 crores when she arrived in Bengaluru from Dubai.
At the time, investigators claimed standard airport security checks had been bypassed. The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence also reported that an officer attached to DGP Ramachandra Rao’s office assisted in the airport protocol. This policeman allegedly acted on orders from the DGP. This incident has raised serious questions about the misuse of access to and influence by officials in criminal cases.

In the viral videos that have become popular online, DGP Ramachandra Rao is allegedly seen with a female in his office. Other clips show similar behavior when different women visit for official reasons. Political circles and members of the public have been critical of the content, demanding transparency and accountability from the police. The state government is reviewing the video and the circumstances that surround it. However, its focus will remain on maintaining the integrity of the Directorate of Civil Rights Enforcement.
