Mumbai Weather Alert: Mithi River on the Brink, Schools And Colleges Shut After Waterlogging

Mumbai Weather Alert: The city of Mumbai is still experiencing heavy rains, which are causing problems in many sectors. This has led the government to take precautionary measures. The Mithi River, currently at 3,10 meters, is on the verge of breaching the 4-meter mark. Maharashtra and the city of Mumbai remain on alert.

Mumbai experienced 177mm of rain in just six to eight hours. This led to waterlogging, which affected transportation. Flights have been disrupted and local train services delayed. Road traffic has also been halted. The India Meteorological Department has released a Red Alert in Mumbai, Thane and Raigad. This alert forecasts extremely heavy rain in these regions. Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde has advised citizens to be cautious as more rain and high tides are predicted.

Maharashtra received heavy rains in the past two days. Red Alerts and Orange Alerts have been issued in several districts. Half of Maharashtra’s districts will be on Red Alert for at least the next 3 days until the 21st. August. PTI quoted CM Shinde as saying, “We discussed what precautions need to be made due to this.”

Maharashtra has made August 19 a public holiday to prioritise safety. This includes schools, anganwadi centres, colleges, and other educational institutions in Mumbai, Thane and the surrounding areas of Raigad and Ratnagiri. Residents are encouraged to stay indoors unless it is necessary. They should also keep up to date with any further developments in the weather.

The intensity of this monsoon has brought to light the difficulties faced by cities during severe weather conditions. It is therefore imperative that departments are prepared and ready for any extreme events.
