Ireland Racism Incidence: An Indian woman was told to “Go Back to India” in a viral video

An instance of Ireland Racism gained attention when Swati Verma shared a video on Instagram of a woman in Dublin verbally abusing Verma and telling her, “go back home to India.” This disturbing encounter has triggered a larger conversation regarding the experiences of immigrants in Ireland.
Verma described the incident, saying that it occurred around 9 pm outside of her gym. She was approached by a woman wearing a Dublin City University badge. She began asking, ‘Why have you come here? What’s your purpose here? Verma asked. She was left feeling shaken and scared by this incident.
Verma shared a video in which the Irish woman is heard making offensive remarks. The woman said, “You are coming to Ireland and paying landlords to live here. Verma asked if Verma should instead live on the streets. The woman responded, “I’m the power, and I’m going to f*k them over.” After questioning Verma about her immigration status, she declared, “I’m the power, and I’m going to fk those over.” Verma calmly tells the woman that she pays taxes and has a visa to work in Ireland. She then says, “Biggest error you’ve ever made… Go back to India.”
Verma said that during her ordeal, she had tried to stay calm and record the event to document the abuse. She wrote, “I was shocked and scared as I tried to understand what was going on.” Since then, she has reported this matter to the local police. Verma wants to bring attention to racism in Ireland by sharing her story. She said, “I reported it and recorded it. I am sharing this because I don’t want anyone to experience what I did.”
Verma acknowledged that the woman might have been ill, but emphasised the fact that this encounter points out a larger problem in Ireland: racism. Her post ended with an affirmation of her right to be a part of society. I’m not sharing this to show sympathy but rather because we still have racism, hate and intimidation on our streets. We need to be vocal. “I still consider Ireland my home, but I don’t think anyone should be forced to defend the right to belong,” she wrote.
